Death of a Unicorn is a 2025 dark comedy/horror movie directed by Alex Scharfman. On their way to a weekend gateway, a father/daughter accidentally kill a unicorn. Soon after the man’s boss goes on a quest to exploit the unicorn’s curative properties. Below is my Death of a Unicorn (2025) movie review

When we meet the daughter/father duo they seem very distant and have some type of a tension going on. Unfortunately this is very cliche. After they hit and kill a magical unicorn the man tries to go on as if nothing happens to please his boss while the daughter looks into the history of unicorns. She finds some tapestries that give background on how people believed in unicorns as well as their unpredictable nature. She tries to warn others of the danger of keeping it in the mansion, but everybody, including her dad, ignores her.

The characters we have at display here are one dimensional. They are very rich and therefore just think about how to get even more rich. They disrespect others and are full of themselves. This makes it fun to see them die in some very brutal ways. Speaking of that, while the movie is not violent in the first half of it, the second half gets very violent. The unicorn is mostly CGI which is very evident in many scenes. However a good portion of it is shown in darkness which blends well with not so great CGI shots.

At one point of the movie everything goes haywire. This is where most of the deaths occur. Since most of these people are obnoxious you are just waiting for them to be taken out in some insane way. If this is not your cup of tea you will not be a fan of the movie. Sure, there is a family drama woven into the plot but that is very cliche. Even the ending is very cliche. What you think will happen will probably happen. It’s good and bad. The plot involving unicorns is unique but the end is very predictable. It did not ruin the movie but it sucks that it was this predictable.

The setting is mainly oriented inside one house (or a mention to us regular folks). There were some good sweeping shots of the surroundings too. However since most of the movie is shown at night we don’t get to explore a lot of that great surrounding.

Anyway the movie was overall enjoyable. It has some parts that were very predictable but most of it is unique. There are some brutal kills that reminds us that nature can be quite unpredictable.
